Statistical Differences Between Dogs and Cats
There is a great deal of variance in the way data is collected and recorded by the many counties in the Atlanta Area. These variations make it impossible to get a complete look at dissimilarities in the way dogs and cats progress through the shelter system. There are a few counties, however, that make the extra effort with more detailed record keeping. Many thanks to Barrow, Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall, Spalding and Walton counties who categorize their statistics according to species allowing this snapshot view of differences in the way dogs and cats manage to survive or die in Atlanta's shelters.

While dogs are impounded at a higher rate than cats (58.2% impound rate for dogs compared to 41.8% impound rate for cats), dogs are much more likely to be reclaimed (12.3% reclaim rate for dogs compared to 1.0% reclaim rate for cats). Dogs have only a slightly higher chance at being adopted (30.6% adoption rate for dogs compared to 25.6% adoption rate for cats). When it comes to surviving an animal shelter, cats in Atlanta fare far worse than dogs; the cat kill rate is 70.2% while the dog kill rate is 52.7%.

As the data indicates, the cat reclaim rate shows the most obvious need for improvement. Proper identification on cats would greatly increase their chances of being reunited with their guardians. Sadly, people are reluctant (and sometimes unable due to a recalcitrant cat) to keep collars and tags on their charges. Many are also unaware that county leash laws apply to cats as well as dogs and that most municipalities mandate identification.

It is important to note that there is more than one way to ID a cat. Traditional collars with engraved tags, embroidered collars with the ID information weaved into the fabric, tattoos, and microchips implanted under the skin are all viable options for making sure your kitty can find his way back home.
