"The First Kittens to Leave Alive"

The Atlanta Humane Society has operated Fulton County animal control since 1974. Community animal welfare advocates have been critical of the operation's high kill rate and lack of adoptions -- four of five animals taken in the door were euthanized.

Last week, after several disagreements with the county, Atlanta Humane Society was replaced by Southern Hope Humane Society, which was awarded a two-month interim contract. Southern Hope has already enlisted volunteers and is asking rescue groups to help out with the animals. They are putting animals at the shelter up for adoption for the first time in years.

"I went through the shelter today to take their photos for our website," reported a Southern Hope volunteer. "Some kittens came in and they are now being fostered by a local group. We'll have volunteers bottle feed them and care for them until they are old enough to be adopted. This is the first litter of young kittens to leave Fulton County Animal Control alive. It's a great day."

The county went to court to seek a temporary restraining order to stop Atlanta Humane Society from removing $325,670 worth of equipment from the shelter. Fulton County claimed it owned the equipment since it was purchased with county funds, but the judge refused to issue the order, criticizing the county's equipment list.

Atlanta Humane Society is also refusing to give the county the dog/cat licensing database and all the other software databases which include vital information such as citations, field operations and cruelty investigations.

Presently, the new shelter management is seeking donations of cat litter, paper towels, bath towels, laundry detergent, and washable cat and dog toys. Care packages can be shipped to:
